Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming justice systems across Asia and the Pacific. From AI-assisted legal research and case management to automated transcription, multilingual translation, online dispute resolution, and chatbot-based legal aid, emerging technologies are reshaping how justice institutions operate and how people access justice.

While these innovations present significant opportunities to improve efficiency, accessibility, and service delivery, they also raise important questions around fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy, and judicial independence.

To explore these opportunities and challenges, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangkok Regional Hub, with the support of the Government of Japan, in partnership with the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), and the Chula AI Centre of Chulalongkorn University, will convene a regional dialogue bringing together judges, policymakers, academics, technology experts, civil society representatives, and development partners from across Asia and the Pacific.

The dialogue will examine emerging governance frameworks for AI in justice systems and explore how countries can ensure that AI adoption remains people-centred, rights-based, and accountable.
