European Union Strengthens Support for Iraq’s Community Reintegration Efforts
February 9, 2026
Baghdad, Iraq | 09 February 2026 - The European Union, through its Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), is providing €8 million over an 18-month period to help Iraq strengthen community reintegration, stability, and social cohesion for families affected by conflict and displacement.
Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative supports Iraqi nationals returning from Al-Hol camp, while also assisting vulnerable members of host communities to ensure reintegration benefits everyone.
The programme is carried out in close partnership with the Government of Iraq, under the leadership of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement (MoMD) and aligns with national priorities and Iraq’s reintegration framework.
“This contribution reflects the European Union’s strong commitment to supporting Iraq’s stability and recovery. By investing in communities and national institutions, we aim to help transform returns into lasting opportunities for peace and resilience.” said Joris Heeren, Head of EU/FPI Regional Team MENA.
The initiative will focus on governorates with the highest numbers of returnees, including Ninewa, Anbar, Salah al-Din, Diyala, Kirkuk, Baghdad, and Erbil, providing support such as livelihood opportunities, small business assistance, mental health and psychosocial services, legal support for civil documentation, and community activities that promote trust and foster very much needed peace and coexistence in affected communities. .
UNDP supports the initiative by working closely with national and local authorities to deliver practical, community-focused assistance.
“For families returning after years of displacement, reintegration is about feeling accepted and being able to rebuild their lives. With the support of the European Union and the leadership of the Government of Iraq, this programme helps communities and returnees move forward together with dignity and stability.” said Titon Mitra, Resident Representative of UNDP Iraq.
Through this EU-funded effort, communities across Iraq will gain access to practical support that helps reduce tensions, prevent re-displacement, and strengthen social stability.
