Policy Brief: Banana Commercialisation and Investment Options for Malawi

May 29, 2026

Malawi’s banana value chain is a high-potential sector that supports food security, incomes, and employment, yet the country remains a net importer because domestic production cannot meet demand. The policy brief identifies key constraints including weak seed systems, persistent Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV), inadequate irrigation, poor farm management practices, high post-harvest losses, policy inconsistencies, and limited market access in remote production areas. To commercialise and revitalise the sector, the brief recommends formalising clean planting material systems, strengthening BBTV management, expanding irrigation investment, promoting good agricultural practices, improving post-harvest handling and market linkages, enhancing policy coordination, and investing in infrastructure and market access to boost productivity, reduce imports, and strengthen competitiveness.
