Malawi SDG Investor Map Narrative Report

April 22, 2025

The SDG Investor Map for Malawi is a dynamic tool developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malawi Country Office and the UNDP SDG Impact, a global initiative with a mandate to develop resources and solutions for accelerating investment towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. SDG Investor Maps capture development needs aligning to the policy priorities that public and private stakeholders inform with in-depth familiarity and socio-economic context.

The SDG Investor Map for Malawi has been developed by reviewing the country’s development needs and policy priorities under the overarching vision of Malawi 2063 and its first 10-year implementation plan. The proven and inclusive mapping process incorporated key information from all stakeholder categories and culminated in validating focus group discussions that reviewed the emerging investment opportunities and confirmed the relevance and validity of the insights.

The Malawi SDG Investor Map report will provide an overview of the prevailing development needs within each identified sector and sub-sector and describe the 7 identified Investment Opportunity Areas (IOAs) that would positively address some of these prevailing needs directly or indirectly. The document will also provide an overview of the methodological process, current investment climate and an overview of Emerging Investment Opportunity Areas (EIOAs) within identified white spaces (an investment area that serves a strong development need in a specific national context but has not recorded a strong policy momentum by way of government commitments or has not seen significant private sector momentum due to absence of viable business models, or both).

Ultimately, this report document serves to compliment a synthesized Excel template that is uploaded to the SDG Investor Platform, allowing investors to use extensive functionality to search for market intelligence on investment opportunities by filtering on a number of criteria of particular interest, including sectors, regions, SDGs as well as return profiles, market size and timeframes of investments.
