June 10, 2025
The E-Justice National Conference held in Malawi on 17–18 September 2024 brought together over 300 participants from across the justice sector and nine countries to chart a path for digital transformation of Malawi’s justice system. Under the theme "Relying on Digital Transformation to Close the Justice Gap", the conference explored opportunities and challenges in digitising justice services to enhance accessibility, efficiency, and transparency. Key discussions focused on introducing e-courts, integrated case management systems, AI tools for legal research, and strengthening data privacy and cybersecurity. Presenters stressed the importance of inclusive design, strong legal frameworks, and interagency coordination. Regional experiences from Rwanda, Tanzania, and Lesotho offered practical lessons. Capacity building emerged as a central requirement, along with phased implementation and pilot testing. A draft roadmap was developed with UNDP support, laying out steps for long-term digital reform. Financial sustainability, infrastructure development—especially in rural areas—and continuous stakeholder engagement were highlighted as essential for success. The conference closed with commitments to move from dialogue to action, making e-justice a core part of Malawi’s development agenda.
