Malawi faces an estimated annual biodiversity financing gap of USD 100 million despite relying on government allocations, donor grants, private-sector engagement and emerging instruments such as carbon markets and payments for ecosystem services. Through the UNDP-led Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), the country is strengthening domestic resource mobilisation, integrating biodiversity into national budgets and development planning, building financial-sector capacity, and using its Biodiversity Finance Plan to attract investment and scale up sustainable financing solutions.
