Enhancing Gender Visibility in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change in the Caribbean: Country Assessment Jamaica

Enhancing Gender Visibility in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change in the Caribbean: Country Assessment Jamaica

June 19, 2015

Part of a regional study titled Enhancing Gender Visibility in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change in the Caribbean this report presents the findings of the Jamaica Country Assessment. Because of its location, geology and geography, Jamaica is prone to several natural hazards. The major threats include landslides, hurricanes, floods, droughts and earthquakes.

In Jamaica, women comprise just over half the population, but represent 70 percent of persons living below the poverty line. This indicates that gender needs to be taken into account in strategies to deal with poverty and the vulnerability it generates in face of a disaster.
