Mental health is an essential pillar of human development—yet it remains one of the most overlooked and underfunded areas of public health across Latin America and the Caribbean. With 1 in 4 people in the Americas expected to experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime, the need for urgent action is clear.

Rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide—especially among young people—are compounded by persistent stigma and limited access to care. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the deep social and economic impacts of untreated mental health conditions, which often undermine development efforts, productivity, and community resilience.

Recognizing the vital connection between mental well-being and sustainable development, UNDP, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is supporting countries in designing national mental health investment cases. These efforts use economic modelling and evidence-based analysis to demonstrate how investing in mental health not only improves lives—but also strengthens economies and reduces long-term public health costs.

This event brings together leading experts, policymakers, and community voices to explore innovative solutions and share experiences in building more inclusive, resilient mental health systems in the region.

Join us as we spotlight the urgent need—and the opportunity—to make mental health a priority for development.
