The transition toward low‑carbon economies in Latin America and the Caribbean depends not only on private investment, but also on ensuring that public budgets and fiscal policies are aligned with climate objectives. This means that government resources must support actions to reduce emissions and increase resilience to climate change.

Tools such as green taxonomies, carbon tax, and systems to track public climate spending help countries better direct their resources and meet their climate commitments, including national plans and long‑term strategies.

This session, organized by UNDP Latin America and the Caribbean and the LEDS LAC Platform, is part of the Knowledge Management Program on Strategies and Instruments for Green Finance in LAC, under the regional initiative Innovative Green Finance in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the support of the Embassy of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

In this session, we will share experiences from Chile and Mexico on how governments are using innovative tools to align public financing with climate objectives. The discussion will address approaches such as green taxonomies, and climate expenditure tracking, highlighting practical lessons, challenges, and opportunities to strengthen climate action in the region.
