The Amazon Basin regulates the global climate and sustains hydrological cycles, food security, and the social stability of millions of people in Latin America and the Caribbean. A new UNDP analysis, "Costs of Inaction on Climate Change in the Amazon Basin," assesses what is at stake: between 14% and 33% of the region's combined GDP could be lost by 2070 if no action is taken.
This regional dialogue will bring together government, civil society, and strategic partners—including the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO)—to analyze the study's findings and their economic and social implications, identify fiscal strategies that strengthen resilience, and explore cooperation and financing mechanisms, including the Loss and Damage Fund, that can transform vulnerability into opportunity.
The goal is to mobilize political will and resources towards a regional roadmap that avoids approaching climate tipping points and incorporates the value of natural capital into economic planning and Amazonian governance.
This dialogue also serves as a preview of the forthcoming publication, offering an opportunity to engage with its key findings ahead of its official release.
