Enhancing Women’s Participation in the Solid Waste Management Sector
This project empowers 660 women in northern Jordan to enhance their livelihoods and well-being by fostering economic opportunities through recycling and upcycling. By addressing systemic barriers to women’s participation as workers, entrepreneurs, and change-makers, the initiative promotes gender equality and economic empowerment. In collaboration with the Ministry of Local Administration, Ministry of Environment, Global Affairs Canada, municipalities, and local partners, women are equipped with skills to create sustainable products, earning incomes while contributing to environmental sustainability. The project also strengthens community-based organizations (CBOs) and cooperatives, capacitating 10 women-led CBOs and 2 cooperatives to drive local green business initiatives.
Aligned with SDGs 1, 5, 8, 11, and 12, the project’s impact extends beyond individual participants to foster systemic change. It has established 12 green business group projects and integrated gender-focused needs assessments into sector plans and budgets, ensuring sustainability and inclusivity. By promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns, the project not only empowers women economically but also strengthens community resilience and contributes to a greener, more equitable future for Jordan.
