UNDP Organises Open Dialogue on Climate Action and NDCs with Jordanian Youth and Policymakers
Amman, January 14, 2025 – As part of Jordan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen sustainability and meet international climate commitments, the United Nations Development Programme in Jordan (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and the Royal Scientific Society, organised an open dialogue between youth and policymakers to discuss the country’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Supported by the “Support Youth Engagement in NDC Review Processes and Climate Policy at the National Levels” project, funded by the Arab Youth Center (AYC), the event showcased UNDP’s commitment to empowering young people as key agents of change in driving climate action.
Held under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Jihad Al-Sawaeer, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, the event brought together key government officials, including H.E. Eng. Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; H.E. Eng. Khaled Al-Hayessa, Assistant Secretary-General for Projects and Rural Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Nedal Al Oran, Manager of the Green Pathways and Inclusive Growth Portfolio at UNDP; and H.E. Rafat Assi, Vice President of the Royal Scientific Society.
At the heart of the dialogue was the acknowledgment of youth as catalysts of sustainable development. Dr. Al Oran emphasised: “Young people are the catalyst of sustainable development, embodying innovation, energy, and resilience. Empowering them with the tools, opportunities, and platforms to lead is essential for shaping a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.”
He further highlighted the vital role of youth in developing innovative solutions, creating green jobs, and leveraging new technologies to achieve Jordan’s climate goals.
The session aimed to explore Jordan’s current NDCs and the roadmap for the upcoming update, while addressing key challenges, national climate policies, and priorities. By facilitating dialogue, the event provided young participants with an opportunity to share their perspectives and collaborate with policymakers to develop actionable solutions that enhance climate resilience and sustainability.
“This dialogue represents a critical step in promoting youth participation in decision-making processes related to climate action,” said Dr. Al-Sawaeer. “It is an opportunity to co-create innovative ideas that shape a more sustainable and prosperous future, while ensuring Jordan meets its commitments under the Paris Agreement.”
The event also featured a detailed presentation on Jordan’s progress in implementing its NDCs and the roadmap for the third iteration of its contributions. Success stories of Jordanian youth leading transformative initiatives in areas such as smart agriculture, clean energy, and carbon emission reduction were shared, underscoring the creative potential of young innovators in addressing climate challenges.
The open dialogue concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between youth and policymakers to identify practical, scalable solutions for advancing Jordan’s climate agenda.
