Turning Ambition into Environmental Achievements
December 2, 2025
Ayat Moayyad Al-Hindawi, a PhD researcher in international law and lecturer at Al-Rafidain University, is at the forefront of driving change in Iraq’s energy and environmental sectors. Through her leadership of the Green Home Project, a privately funded initiative promoting sustainable energy, and her dedication to implementing international standards in energy and environmental management, Ayat has turned her vision into tangible contributions to Iraq’s sustainable development.
Ayat’s work is further supported by her international certifications in Environmental Management Quality (ISO 14001) and Energy Management Systems (ISO 50001). These credentials enhance the credibility of her projects and help her transfer best practices to local institutions and students, improving Iraq’s environmental performance and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
"The UNDP has provided invaluable support, allowing me to develop policies that align with global standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," Ayat explains.
Her efforts extend beyond institutional impact. Through training workshops organized by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility, Ayat has guided students in addressing real-world challenges in energy, environmental law, and sustainability. She has also conducted awareness campaigns across Iraqi governorates, engaging between 150–300 participants in each of the eight-month workshops, which were held under the patronage of the Prime Minister.
Looking to the future, Ayat’s research will focus on climate change, green financing, and cultural heritage, particularly exploring the effects of global warming on unplanned urban development. "My goal is to engage decision-makers more effectively to pass policies that protect the environment and support the achievement of the SDGs," she says.
Through her work, Ayat demonstrates how law and scientific knowledge can be harnessed as practical tools for sustainable development. Supported by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility, Ayat’s achievements reflect the powerful impact of collaboration and expertise in achieving lasting environmental change.
