UN’s highest-ranking development official for the Arab Region visiting Iraq

Baghdad, Iraq, 16 June 2023 – The United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Arab States, Mr. Abdallah Al Dardari, will visit Iraq on an official week-long mission.  

Mr. Al Dardari’s visit comes at a critical time for Iraq. Following stabilization gains, Iraq is currently in the midst of a transition toward sustaining peace through long-term development solutions.  

During his mission, Mr. Al Dardari will meet with senior government officials, private sector and civil society organizations, and youth representatives to discuss UNDP's work and contribution to Iraq’s development priorities and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.   

Mr. Al Dardari’s programme includes field visits to liberated areas to meet national and local partners where UNDP has provided support under the Funding Facility for Stabilization. He will also visit the south of Iraq as well as the Kurdistan Region to meet partners and community stakeholders. Mr. Al Dardari will hold discussions on the transition from humanitarian to development support with leading thinkers, economists, community leaders, and experts in the areas of climate change, environmental policy and financing instruments to support a green transition towards a sustainable economy.
