Combating Misinformation Online in Iraq

In Iraq, a country where more than half its population uses social media, a simple click of the mouse can easily spread misinformation and fake news. From false health reports to religious and cultural misconceptions, to violence against individuals or groups, misinformation across digital channels is rife – and continues to spread.

UNDP Iraq has partnered with Tech4Peace, a prominent Iraqi non-governmental organization that tracks and debunks fake news to provide examples of misinformation in Iraq, as well as tips to combat the spread of fake news.

This initiative is part of the Media and Advocacy component of UNDP Iraq’s Social Cohesion Programme, which seeks to promote social cohesion through use of social and traditional media platforms, competitions, capacity building of media professionals, and combating hate speech and misinformation in Iraq.
