Lebanon
About us
For more than six decades, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has worked alongside the people and institutions of Lebanon, maintaining a long-standing commitment to the country’s development through periods of peace, conflict and change. From post-war recovery and institutional development to responding to successive crises, UNDP has adapted its support to Lebanon’s evolving needs and priorities, building lasting partnerships with national and local institutions, civil society, communities, the private sector and development partners.
In recent years, Lebanon has faced overlapping crises, including the impact of the conflict in Syria and resulting displacement, the economic and financial collapse since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beirut Port explosion, and escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024 and 2026. These shocks have disrupted livelihoods, damaged infrastructure, strained public services and institutions, and compounded longstanding economic, social and environmental challenges.
Against this backdrop, UNDP works with the Government of Lebanon and national and local partners to connect stabilization, recovery and reform. Recognizing that development cannot wait for a crisis to end, our approach brings together immediate recovery efforts and long-term development priorities.
We support nationally led reforms, strengthen institutions and public services, and connect policies with local action to deliver tangible improvements in people's lives. By mobilizing partnerships, expertise and investment, we help create the conditions for lasting recovery, economic opportunities and renewed trust between people and institutions.
Our work spans three interconnected focus areas: Crisis Prevention and Crisis Response, Governance and Reform, and Green and Inclusive Development. Together, these efforts strengthen crisis preparedness and recovery, accountable institutions and social cohesion, inclusive economic opportunities, and climate and environmental action.
Across these areas, we promote gender equality, women’s leadership, youth participation and inclusion. We draw on data, innovation, digital solutions and partnerships to translate policies into practical improvements in people’s lives. Our work is guided by national priorities, the Sustainable Development Goals and UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2026–2029.
Lebanon’s path forward requires more than rebuilding what has been lost. It calls for institutions people can trust, an economy that creates opportunities, communities able to shape their future, and responsible management of the country’s natural resources.
UNDP remains committed to working with the Government of Lebanon and its partners to advance nationally led solutions, strengthen institutions and expand opportunities for people and communities. Together, we aim to help Lebanon move beyond successive crises towards lasting recovery, inclusive development and a more peaceful and sustainable future.
