The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Government of the United Kingdom, is supporting the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) through the ‘Technical Assistance for Institutional Strengthening of the Guyana Elections Commission to Enhance Electoral Process in Guyana’ project. This initiative is designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of GECOM to meet international standards by enhancing transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency of Guyana’s electoral processes.
Under this project, GECOM is receiving the following support:
Technical and advisory assistance by senior electoral experts to strengthen internal processes in elections management, information technology, strategic communications and post-electoral activities.
Capacity building to enhance institutional effectiveness in electoral management and communications.
Technical support to improve stakeholder outreach and engagement initiatives.
The electoral experts will support GECOM with international expertise and best practices to enhance operations and logistics, results transmission, and ICT for managing the electoral processes, and strategic communications. The project also supports the implementation of inclusive practices to ensure full participation of persons with disabilities in the electoral process.
Furthermore, capacity building, a central component of the initiative, focuses on enhancing GECOM’s operational systems and human resources. Personnel will be trained in, inter alia, electoral laws, polling procedures, accessibility measures, strategic communications , logistics planning, and the use of ICT systems. Additionally, the project will facilitate workshops for media professionals and electoral stakeholders to promote accurate, inclusive, and responsible coverage of the electoral process.
Additionally, the project places strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement to reach different segments of society. It supports structured engagements with key stakeholders to foster transparency, reduce misinformation, and build public trust in the electoral system.
The project, implemented by UNDP, is funded by the Government of the United Kingdom through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), with a total allocation of GBP 750,000.
