Women In Local Governance And Peace Building: Lessons From West Gonja And Lambussie

February 25, 2025

Despite national progress on gender equality, women in Ghana—particularly in the West Gonja and Lambussie districts—remain underrepresented in local governance and formal peace building structures. Recent elections saw no women elected as assembly members in either district, and appointed positions also reflect low female participation. While women contribute significantly to informal peace efforts, they are largely excluded from formal mechanisms like regional peace councils. Barriers include financial constraints, cultural norms, limited political support, and gendered disinformation, all of which discourage women from political engagement. Yet, research shows that inclusive governance strengthens democracy and peace. Enhancing women’s participation at the local level is essential for sustainable development and effective decision-making.
