In the Bongo District of Ghana’s Upper East Region, a quiet yet powerful transformation is unfolding, led by Hanah Asanyuure, an elected female assembly member with a vision for unity. Her initiative, Fostering Inclusion and Harmony, is a grassroots effort aimed at bridging social divides and promoting the inclusion of the marginalized Fulbe community.

Hannah’s journey began when she participated in a capacity-building training organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Peace Council with funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund. This training equipped her with the tools to challenge prejudice and foster inclusive dialogue. With a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to justice, Hannah returned to her community determined to change mindsets and promote social cohesion.

Through a series of inclusive community dialogues, Hannah brought together women, youth, and Fulbe representatives to engage in open conversations about shared humanity and mutual respect. These efforts led to a noticeable reduction in the use of derogatory language, such as the term Adaboribisi, which had long been used to demean the Fulbe. More importantly, her initiative fostered greater inclusion of marginalized groups in community decision-making processes, strengthening the social fabric of Bongo.

The impact of Hannah’s work is evident both in numbers and in personal stories. Approximately 100 community members, including women and youth, actively participated in the dialogue sessions. Additionally, over 300 listeners tuned in to Bongo Community Radio to hear messages promoting inclusion and respect. Testimonies from Fulbe community members reflect a newfound sense of belonging and dignity, underscoring the qualitative success of the initiative.

Hannah faced significant challenges, particularly resistance to changing entrenched biases. However, she addressed these obstacles through participatory dialogue, social gatherings, and strategic use of media platforms. These approaches gradually shifted perceptions and highlighted the value of diversity within the community.

Her experience offers several key lessons. Sensitization and community dialogue are essential tools for challenging stereotypes and fostering unity. Moreover, empowering women leaders like Hannah can have a transformative impact on social cohesion, as they often bring unique perspectives and inclusive approaches to leadership.

The initiative also presents best practices that can be replicated elsewhere. Engaging all stakeholders, especially women, youth, and marginalized groups, in open dialogue ensures that diverse voices are heard and respected. Leveraging community radio proved to be an effective strategy for amplifying messages of inclusion and reaching a broader audience.

To sustain and expand such efforts, policymakers and practitioners are encouraged to invest in leadership training programs for women and support platforms that facilitate inclusive community engagement and decision-making.

Hannah Asanyuure’s story is a powerful testament to the role of women in grassroots peacebuilding. Her leadership not only transformed her community but also serves as an inspiring model for inclusive governance and social harmony across Ghana and beyond.
