UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In order to achieve its mandate, UNDP relies entirely on voluntary contributions from UN Member States, multilateral organizations, private sector and other sources, in the form of unrestricted regular resources (core), and contributions earmarked for a specific theme, programme or project.
The UNDP's main goal in Suriname is to promote human development and reduce inequalities, aligning with the new government’s commitment to improving the lives of all citizens. This goal is being pursued through a series of strategic actions aimed at addressing issues like extreme poverty, creating opportunities for disadvantaged communities, bridging the gap between the coastland and hinterland, enhancing citizen security and social cohesion, and improving access to quality primary healthcare. Additionally, there is a focus on sustainable development, including the use of renewable energy in rural areas, and strengthening local democracy.
In the new country programme, UNDP will support many of these initiatives, primarily in the areas of poverty, governance, and the environment. Building on successful past efforts, the programme will adapt to changing national needs, with new priorities like citizen security and the management of extractive industries. A key focus of the programme will be capacity-building, working closely with key ministries, local authorities, and civil society to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
