Where we work

Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia

100%

of the population has access to electricity.

93.3%

of the population have access to clean cooking solutions.

82%

of the region's global greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector.

Our focus

Since the Europe and Central Asia region is already enjoying full electricity access in all countries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, UNDP’s work in the region is focusing on mitigation of emissions related to the use of fossil fuel energy through:

  • Improved energy efficiency of buildings
  • Low-carbon urban development
  • Financing mechanisms for investments in low carbon solutions.

Specific challenges in the region consist of low and subsidized energy prices as well as absent regulatory practices. To address these barriers, UNDP supports the development of policies and regulations that create the necessary enabling environments for private sector investments to invest in energy efficiency or other low carbon solutions.
