A Turbulent Future: How Climate Change Impacts Young People in the Pacific

May 23, 2024

This policy paper, "A Turbulent Future: How Climate Change Impacts Young People in the Pacific," examines the extensive and multifaceted crises affecting the youth in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) as a result of climate change.

The paper elucidates how the rapid rise in sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation disproportionately impact the younger population, leading to severe economic, social, and psychological challenges. It highlights the increased displacement and loss of livelihoods caused by environmental instability, which significantly hampers the well-being and future potential of young people. Economic instability is exacerbated by high unemployment and underemployment rates, forcing many to migrate for better opportunities and contributing to brain drain. Additionally, climate-induced migration disrupts cultural and spiritual connections to the land, creating significant identity crises and potential statelessness. Gender inequality is also amplified, with women and girls facing higher rates of violence and limited access to resources and decision-making processes. The continuous stressors contribute to high levels of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among the youth.

The paper concludes with comprehensive recommendations for empowering Pacific youth through inclusive policymaking, targeted economic support, digital transformation, legal reforms, mental health services, and gender-sensitive policies, advocating for a sustainable and resilient future for the youth of the Pacific Islands.
