Strengthening Food Security in Myanmar: A Roadmap for Localized Action
December 22, 2023
This report provides an in-depth analysis of the country’s food and agriculture systems amid the combined shocks of COVID-19, the 2021 military takeover, climatic extremes, and soaring food prices. It examines the four key pillars of food security — availability, access, utilization, and stability — across states, regions, and agro-ecological zones, highlighting the structural weaknesses and urgent challenges households face. The report identifies priority interventions such as restorative and conservation agriculture, improved market access, social protection, and nutrition-sensitive approaches linking agriculture, WASH, and health. Emphasizing localized, community-based solutions, it offers a roadmap to strengthen resilience, reduce dependence on prolonged humanitarian aid, and build more sustainable food systems in Myanmar.
