Helping Communities Weather the Socio-Economic Downturn: Building Urban Resilience
Helping Communities Weather the Socio-Economic Downturn: Building Urban Resilience
December 5, 2022
This UNDP and UN Women report presents findings from a baseline survey of households in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, following the twin shocks of COVID-19 and the 2021 military takeover. The study highlights how falling incomes, food insecurity, growing debt, and weakened access to health, education, and basic services have left urban communities — particularly those in eight highly vulnerable townships — struggling to cope. It documents rising insecurity, increased care burdens on women, and the risk of deepening poverty among slum dwellers and low-income households. The report underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to restore jobs and livelihoods, strengthen essential services, and support community-led resilience initiatives, especially for women and youth.
