Estimates of Monetary Poverty Among Children in Myanmar
Estimates of Monetary Poverty Among Children in Myanmar
May 15, 2023
This joint UNDP–UNICEF report provides updated estimates of child monetary poverty in Myanmar, revealing that by 2022 more than half of all children (53.3%) were living below the national poverty line. Compared to 2017, this represents an increase of 4 million children living in poverty. The findings highlight how the combined effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 military takeover, economic contraction, and ongoing conflict have deepened child deprivation across both rural and urban areas. The report also assesses how existing social protection measures, such as maternal and child cash transfers, can mitigate poverty risks, particularly for children under five. Its evidence underscores the urgent need to strengthen child-focused policies and expand social protection to prevent long-term generational impacts.
