Late on 31 August, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan, leaving a wake of destruction in mountain communities across Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman. Since then, strong aftershocks have continued to rattle the region, further frightening families, worsening road conditions, and hindering rescue and relief. The human toll is high. According to the latest assessments, more than 2,200 people have lost their lives, nearly 3,700 have been injured, and at least 6,700 homes have been destroyed.

UNDP’s Response to the Earthquake in Afghanistan

UNDP is working together with UN partners, civil society, and communities to link immediate humanitarian response with early recovery and resilience building. Afghanistan’s overlapping crises demand layered, long-term solutions. Whilst humanitarian aid is critical, it must be matched by investments in recovery and resilience.
