World Humanitarian Day Statement by UNDP Acting Administrator
August 19, 2025
On World Humanitarian Day, we honour our UN colleagues and all humanitarian workers who have lost their lives helping others. We remember all those we have lost to increasing violence and rally support for people affected by crises around the world. Humanitarian workers risk their lives to deliver lifesaving aid, restore hope, and help over 300 million people recover from conflict or disaster. And in 2024, a record number of humanitarians were killed in the line of duty or in their homes.
All humanitarian workers deserve protection, and so do the civilians they serve. Respect for international humanitarian law is a fundamental obligation. As the UN Secretary-General says, this rule is non-negotiable and is binding on all parties to conflict, always and everywhere. It is a duty we owe to them and to our shared humanity.
UNDP urges all parties to protect civilian lives and infrastructure and ensure that essential services remain accessible, especially in times of crisis. Hospitals, schools, markets, and other public infrastructure are lifelines for communities. Their destruction not only deepens human suffering but also hinders recovery and prolongs humanitarian need.
From using technology and innovation to help detect and safely remove mines in Ukraine, to providing solar power for crisis-hit communities in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, and more, UNDP clears the way for humanitarians to do their work and improve people's lives in crisis situations. Safe and accessible local institutions, infrastructure, basic services, livelihoods, and other early recovery efforts are essential to help affected communities get back on their feet and advance a future beyond crisis.
None of this is possible without the brave people who serve those in need. Today and every day, we call for strong and sustained global solidarity. Humanitarian action saves lives, protects rights, and sows seeds for lasting recovery and peace.
