The state of climate ambition

July 31, 2022

The Arab States region is home to 394 million people across 19 countries and one territory. Arab countries achieved significant development gains – especially in health and education – after independence. However, for most countries in the Arab States region, these gains have been hindered by war, protracted conflicts, and fragility that have led to a slowdown in economic growth, unstable social conditions, and inequalities in living standards.

The region is highly heterogeneous in terms of income per capita; including four Least Developed Countries alongside several of the world’s biggest oil and gas producers, and is responsible for 5.41 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This Snapshot explores regional NDC submission, ambition and quality status while assessing progress on key systems and architecture for NDC implementation. It also looks at areas of past and future Climate Promise support, showcasing regional champions and providing insight on emerging trends and opportunities.

The 2022 State of Global Ambition Regional Snapshots provide regional analysis of Climate Promise supported countries NDC status and implementation readiness. They build upon, and update information, from UNDP's Global NDC Outlook Report 2021: The State of Global Ambition
