UNDP and KSrelief launch project to strengthen community resiliency and social cohesion in Yemen

October 10, 2023

Aden, Yemen: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) have launched a project to support targeted vulnerable communities in Yemen. The 13 month-long project will benefit over 1,100 women, youth, unemployed Yemenis, and members of marginalized groups in six districts across Aden, Hadramaut and Lahj governorates.

Prolonged conflict in Yemen has left 4.5 million Yemenis internally displaced, leaving many living in poverty and marginalized, negatively affecting the country’s social fabric. This project will aim to build the capacity of local community institutions to respond to conflict, strengthen local mechanisms for peacebuilding and social cohesion, and restore and stabilize the livelihoods of vulnerable individuals. Specific initiatives include the establishment of peace committees, a vocational training programme, and technical support and equipment grants for micro-businesses.

“With support from KSrelief, we are encouraging engagement from community institutions in Yemen to identify their own communal priorities and initiatives and act on their priorities. Together, we’re providing sustainable assistance to crisis-affected groups through the creation of livelihoods and support to locally owned peacebuilding initiatives,” says Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP Yemen Resident Representative.
