UNDP India Accelerator Lab

We are actively leveraging the power of grassroots innovations and new emerging technologies for addressing complex developmental challenges in India.

The UNDP India Accelerator Lab explores, maps and experiments with a portfolio of solutions in air pollution, climate resilient agriculture and gender equality. The Lab operates at three levels – policy engagement, institutionalizing innovation and technology augmentation. At the policy level, the Lab has partnered with NITI Aayog – the National Planning Organization of the Government of India – to promote innovations at grassroots through policy advocacy efforts and the Government of Telangana to promote data-driven policy experimentation. Together with the Honeybee network we have developed a Grassroots Innovation Database (GRID) with over 1400 grassroots innovations ready for deployment to benefit stakeholders in a wide range of sectors. With the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, we are establishing 75 Community COVID Resilience Resource Centres to deliver science, technology and innovation based interventions across diverse regions of India by 2022. At the technology level, the Lab has developed a Geospatial & Artificial Intelligence based platform with the University of Nottingham to identify 47,000+ hotspots of air pollution to help environmental regulators. The Lab has also developed a blockchain-powered traceability and trading platform in partnership with the Spices Board India to increase transparency, traceability and quality assurance in the spices value chain as well as increasing profits for small and marginal spice farmers and small scale spice processors  in India.

The UNDP India Accelerator Lab was selected as a participant in the Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge. Through the Innovation Challenge, seven UNDP Accelerator Labs are collaborating with Japanese companies to co-develop and design models to test potential solutions to address specific development challenges problems identified by the Labs.

The UNDP Accelerator Lab in India, together with the Japanese company NEC Corporation, is developing a proof of concept for a blockchain platform for spices.
