UNDP and the Netherlands expand partnership to support access to justice in Yemen

June 29, 2025

Aden, Yemen: 29 June 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) welcomes the generous US$1.8 million contribution from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to continue supporting safety and justice as part of the foundation for a sustainable peace in Yemen.

Building on the three-year Promoting Inclusive Access to Justice in Yemen PIAJY I Project, which saw 1,300 disputes resolved through restorative justice, this second phase will continue to support Yemen’s most vulnerable groups, focusing on civil and property justice, gender justice, and protection of detainees.

“Thanks to generous support from the Netherlands, we are putting justice within reach of those who need it most in Yemen—ensuring no one is left behind,” said Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP Yemen Resident Representative. “By strengthening both community and institutional mechanisms with a people-centered approach, we are building trust for a more inclusive and resilient justice system, that will support Yemenis for years to come.”

This phase will support communities in Aden and Mukalla, creating justice ecosystems that link community members and stimulate local solutions to domestic, housing, land and property disputes.

“Helping Yemenis resolve their conflicts is a direct and practical way to contribute to peacebuilding,” said Jeannette Seppen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Yemen. “This next phase builds on the significant achievements of UNDP in earlier phases, in which Yemenis themselves, and particularly women, played a critical role in resolving conflicts and improving the lives of others.  We look forward to continuing in Aden and building on the work funded by the Republic of Korea in Mukalla.”

This agreement reinforces the long-standing commitment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and UNDP to support the rule of law in Yemen.
