Uganda is taking significant action to identify and reform subsidies that unintentionally harm biodiversity. Through the UNDP Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), the country has assessed harmful incentives and developed a Subsidy Redesign Action Plan to support the implementation of Target 18 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The technical brief highlights two major subsidy areas, agricultural chemicals and packaging materials, where current incentives contribute to pollution, ecosystem degradation, and unsustainable production. Proposed redesign options include shifting support toward organic and eco-friendly alternatives, promoting Integrated Pest Management, and encouraging the use of recyclable or biodegradable packaging.
By repurposing harmful subsidies and incentivizing greener practices, Uganda is strengthening its commitment to sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
