Somali Women Forging Alliances to Safeguard Equal Rights For All

March 19, 2023

The survey report shows that women can and do play a critical role in sustaining Somali households, communities and society despite several challenges posed by the insurgency and extreme climate events. For example, while 74.2 % of the 10,300 women who participated in this survey reported that they serve as main or sole breadwinners for their families, almost half of the respondents reported that they had fled their homes because of either drought or flood (49.7%). An overwhelming majority of respondents want more opportunities to participate in decision-making (92%) and indicated that they would have more access to a decision-maker if that person was a woman (86.6 %).

The report recommends taking steps like implementing the Somali Women's Charter, ensuring gender equality in the national development plan, investing in women's education, removing barriers to economic activities, addressing climate change effects, and improving gender-related data to accelerate progress in gender equality, women's empowerment, and sustainable development in Somalia.
