Inclusive Peace: Voices of Somali Women Peacebuilders
February 21, 2025
This report published by UNDP and Creative Alternatives Now (CAN) highlights the vital yet often overlooked contributions of Somali women in peacebuilding, showcasing their resilience, leadership, and transformative impact on conflict resolution and long-term stability in Somalia. Despite facing significant social, political, and legal challenges—including underrepresentation, informal participation in governance, and limited access to justice—Somali women peacebuilders have consistently driven change through collaborative, culturally rooted solutions. Drawing on 20 in-depth interviews with leading women peacebuilders and an analysis of existing research, this report examines their experiences, strategies, and the structural barriers they encounter. It also provides actionable recommendations—such as increased funding, capacity-building initiatives, and formal recognition of their work—to empower these change agents and amplify their critical role in shaping a more inclusive and peaceful Somalia.
