Greening our own operations through the Smart Facilities approach
January 24, 2025
To achieve the ambitious global climate goals, we must lead by example and take bold steps to reduce UNDP’s own operational emissions.
That’s why six years ago, UNDP launched the Greening Moonshot initiative, a commitment to cutting the organization’s carbon footprint by 50% by 2030. Through this initiative, UNDP has already funded 140 energy and e-mobility projects across its global facilities, collectively avoiding nearly 3,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to planting over 50,000 trees.
At the heart of this effort lies the Smart Facilities approach, which has played a central role in implementing most of these transformative projects. By taking a holistic perspective and integrate cutting-edge energy, digital connectivity, data, and security technologies, this allows us to optimize efficiency and sustainability.
Explore real-world examples of how UNDP is leading by example, greening its own operations through the Greening Moonshot initiative, in Afghanistan, Cameroon, Sri Lanka, Syria and Ukraine. Learn more about these transformative efforts and their measurable impact on the UNDP Climate Promise website.
