From Partnership to Impact: UNDP and Saudi Arabia Advance a Shared Water Sustainability Agenda
March 31, 2026
At a Suhoor gathering that brought together senior officials, colleagues, and partners, Ms. Nahid Hussein, Resident Representative of UNDP Saudi Arabia, reaffirmed the strength of the strategic partnership between UNDP and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, particularly through its long standing partnership with the Water Deputyship.
In her remarks, Ms. Hussein reflected on the deeper meaning of Ramadan as a time of generosity, solidarity, and reflection on our responsibilities toward communities and future generations. She noted that these values resonate strongly with the spirit of the partnership between UNDP and national institutions, which seeks to advance water sustainability, strengthen resource management efficiency, and support the Kingdom’s development ambitions under Saudi Vision 2030.
Framing water as a strategic development priority, she emphasized that “water resource management is not merely a development sector; it is a fundamental pillar of environmental security, economic stability, and quality of life.” Her message captured the broader significance of the partnership: a practical and forward-looking collaboration built on technical expertise, knowledge exchange, and a shared commitment to long-term institutional strengthening.
Ms. Hussein’s remarks centered on three core messages. First, the importance of aligning joint efforts with Saudi Arabia’s national priorities, particularly in environmental sustainability, water-use efficiency, and the development of an integrated, science-based system for managing natural resources. Second, the importance of moving from planning and policy design to measurable results on the ground through initiatives that enhance institutional performance and strengthen the sector’s readiness to address water scarcity and climate change. Third, the value of investing in people and long-term partnerships by empowering national talent, strengthening leadership, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration capable of sustaining impact over time.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for both UNDP and the Ministry to express mutual appreciation for the continued commitment and constructive spirit demonstrated by both agencies as well as by the colleagues who have contributed to the success of recent programmes and initiatives.
As UNDP KSA continues to work alongside national partners, the evening’s message was clear: sustainable progress is built not only through sound planning, but through trust, shared purpose, and the ability to translate vision into meaningful and lasting impact.
