Dr. Ammar Hamadien Explores Ethics and Impact of AI in Third Session of UNDP Saudi Arabia’s AI Workshop Series

Riyadh, May 2025 — As artificial intelligence continues to shape the global development landscape, UNDP Saudi Arabia hosted the third session of its AI workshop series under the theme: “AI: Understanding Technology, Ethics, and Global Impact.” Dr. Ammar Hamadien, AI and Digital Consultant, led the session, engaging staff in an interactive discussion on how AI is transforming societies—and the ethical questions it raises along the way.

Building on the first two sessions led by Sammy Faisal and Gavin Erasmus, Dr. Ammar’s workshop focused on the global implications of AI, the urgency of inclusive digital governance, and the critical need to develop ethical frameworks that reflect local realities.

Participants explored the fundamentals of AI—its history, power, and growing environmental footprint—while diving deeper into pressing concerns such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, equitable access, and the digital divide.

The session also spotlighted emerging risks in healthcare, education, and the environment, underscoring the importance of transparency, accountability, and sustainability in AI systems.

Notably, Dr. Ammar emphasized that AI’s promise cannot be fully realized without addressing its ethical dimensions: “Responsible AI is not a luxury—it is a necessity. As development professionals, we must localize and humanize this technology before it is defined for us.”

This powerful session energized participants to think beyond tools and platforms, and toward policies, partnerships, and safeguards. It also highlighted UNDP’s unique position to champion ethical AI across the region—working hand in hand with governments, civil society, and youth to ensure AI becomes a force for good.
