Biodiversity: The Fabric of Life That Holds Us Together

As we mark World Environment Day this June, it's worth remembering another key moment just weeks earlier: the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed on 22 May. Together, these global moments remind us that protecting the environment isn’t just a celebration — it’s a commitment to rebuilding harmony with nature.

Biodiversity isn’t just about the creatures we protect — it’s about the systems that sustain life. When biodiversity unravels, so too does the resilience of our economies, the integrity of our food chains, and the stability of our climate.

In his official message on the occasion, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stark warning:
"The fabric of global biodiversity is unraveling — and humanity is to blame."
Toxic pollution, climate disruption, ecosystem collapse — driven by short-term interests and unsustainable practices — are pushing nature to the brink.

Yet there is still a path forward. It lies in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — a bold plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss while advancing sustainable development.

As the host country of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification’s 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has emerged as a catalyst in reimagining how development and nature can thrive together. Through large-scale ecosystem restoration efforts and flagship strategies like Vision 2030 and the Middle East Green Initiative, the Kingdom is redefining environmental ambition.

At the heart of these efforts, the United Nations Development Programme in Saudi Arabia is working with national partners like the National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification to integrate biodiversity protection into land management strategies and drought resilience planning.

This year’s biodiversity theme, “Be Part of the Plan”, is a call to action for everyone — governments, institutions, communities, and individuals — to step into collective responsibility.

As the world prepares for the next Biodiversity Conference in 2026, one message rings louder than ever:
Preserving biodiversity isn’t a luxury — it’s a shared duty. Let’s be part of the plan.
