Climate-induced relocation and land disputes: Stories from Tuvalu

September 8, 2022

Inclusive consultation is a core component of the Climate Security in the Pacific Project. Understanding the critical climate-related security challenges faced by local communities is the most effective way to identify effective resilience-building initiatives at community level.

The project conducted inclusive consultations in all 9 islands of Tuvalu to build capacities of local communities, especially vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and people with disabilities.

Through these inclusive community consultations, climate-induced relocation and land disputes were identified as major concerns for local communities.

In the central and southern islands, severe coastal erosion is also an alarming issue of concern for local communities. The disappearance of small islets indicates that Tuvalu, like other low-lying atoll nations in the Pacific, are facing existential threat of disappearance.

For Pacific Island Countries, time is running out. We need urgent climate action to ensure a sustainable future not only for Pacific people but for our planet.
