Afio School Transformed Through Community-Led Landscape Upgrade
June 24, 2025
Once surrounded by swampy, mosquito-prone terrain, the school now boasts clean, landscaped grounds.
Afio Primary School has undergone a remarkable transformation through the Afio Primary School Land Degradation Management Project. This community-driven initiative under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – under Phase 3 of its Community-Based Adaptation programme is funded by the Government of Australia.
Once surrounded by swampy, mosquito-prone terrain, the school now boasts clean, landscaped grounds that not only beautify the area but also significantly reduce health risks for students and staff.
This environmental and infrastructure rehabilitation project, coordinated by local leader Ansa Hou, focused on reclaiming degraded swamp land to provide a safer, healthier, and more conducive environment for learning.
“This project has completely changed how students and teachers experience their daily school life,” said Ansa.
“Where there was once waterlogging and constant mosquito issues, we now see clean grounds, pathways, and lighted surroundings. It has improved health, comfort, and morale.”
Key activities of the project included profiling and clearing the degraded swamp land, backfilling low-lying areas with community support, constructing both vehicle and pedestrian access roads, installing proper drainage systems, and erecting stone walls and fencing for better site security. Solar-powered streetlights have been installed to enhance safety and visibility, while climate awareness and training programs were delivered to nearby communities to encourage local stewardship and climate resilience.
The transformed school environment not only mitigates environmental health hazards such as mosquito-borne illnesses, but also serves as a demonstration of climate adaptation through sustainable landscaping and disaster risk reduction. With visible results already improving the well-being of students and the broader Afio community, the project is a powerful example of how grassroots initiatives can lead the way in building climate resilience.
The SGP empowers local communities to take the lead in addressing environmental challenges. Each project is proposed, designed, and implemented by the community itself, ensuring ownership, sustainability, and long-term impact. The Afio Primary School initiative highlights how locally driven efforts, when supported by targeted grants, can yield tangible improvements in education, public health, and climate adaptation.
Since its inception in 1992, the Small Grants Programme has been supporting innovative, community-based responses to environmental challenges across the globe. Through this latest success in Afio, the SGP continues its legacy of placing local communities at the center of environmental change, one school, one project, and one landscape at a time.
