Colleagues

Bula vinaka, Alii and a very warm welcome to you all.

It is an honor and privileged to deliver the keynote address in this opening session of the Validation Workshop for Sectoral Green House Gas (GHG) baselines, mitigation scenarios, and Measurement Reporting and Verification (MRV) for Palau’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

This workshop is part of UNDP’s global initiative “The Climate Promise” in response to the climate challenge. UNDP has agreed to Climate Promise workplans with 118 countries, making it the world’s largest offer of support for the enhancement of the country’s climate pledges.

I would like to congratulate the Palau Energy Administration and the Government of Palau for completing all the activities under the Climate Promise Phase I. As the Climate Promise Phase II has been announced by UNDP Headquarters during the COP in November last year, I am hopeful that our collaboration will be continued in supporting NDC implementation.

I am sure that the reports on Sectoral GHG baselines, mitigation scenarios, and MRV will support the Government of Palau to enhance its NDC to the next level. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the stakeholders who provided their valuable inputs during the study and contribution in the reports. I am confident that the workshop will be an avenue to provide feedback to finetune the Report.

Finally, my sincere appreciation to the Palau National Energy Committee and Palau Energy Administration for the leadership and making the Climate Promise initiatives a successful intervention.

Vinaka vakalevu, Sulang
