Suva, Fiji - The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore opportunities for creating institutional, financial, and operational frameworks required to improve green growth and climate resilience and the GGGI and UNDP reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Fiji’s national, sub-national and local green growth planning, and boosting sustainable public and private investment flows to translate green growth, climate strategies, and investment plans into actionable measures.

“We are pleased to be partnering with UNDP to support and promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth that is built on a strong foundation of green growth planning and financing”, GGGI’s Pacific Regional Director Katerina Syngellakis said. “Our mandates are very much aligned, and we look forward to combining our efforts to scale-up climate friendly investment in the Pacific,” Ms. Syngellakis added.

“The focus areas of this MOU are expected to particularly help catalyze adaptive capacity in climate vulnerable communities as well as boost resilience for rural and climate vulnerable people, enhance gender equality and women economic empowerment through food security, diversifying jobs and livelihoods,” UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji Resident Representative a.i. Ms. Dawn Del Rio said.

The two organizations will use this as an opportunity to collaborate on the creation of financing mechanisms that will enable green investments and encourage private sector involvement in the transition to green energy and climate action.

An initial area of focus for collaboration will be to provide technical support to the Rural Electrification Fund for administration and implementation of the fund, including proposal preparation for resource mobilisation, feasibility studies and capacity building.
