Yaren District, Nauru –Nauru has taken transformative steps towards sustainable energy with the launch of its first electric bus (e-bus) in Yaren District, marking a significant commitment by the government to reducing emissions and advancing sustainable energy solutions.

This milestone is a key component of the Supporting Mainstreamed Achievement of Roadmap Targets on Energy in Nauru (SMARTEN) project, a partnership between the Government of Nauru through the Department of Climate Change and National Resilience (DCCNR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Office, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The introduction of this innovative solution reflects the country’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, and support long-term climate goals in line with its National Energy Roadmap.

The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Government of Nauru and UNDP, highlighting the importance of this achievement for the island nation’s energy future.

In his keynote address, the Honorable Asterio Appi M.P., Minister for DCCNR stated: “It is a privilege to mark this historic milestone—the launch of Nauru’s first electric buses and charging station under the SMARTEN initiative. This achievement represents a tangible step toward cleaner, more sustainable public transport and highlights our shared vision for a resilient future.”

UNDP Pacific Office Deputy Resident Representative for the North Pacific, Kevin Petrini, congratulated all partners and emphasized the SMARTEN project’s role in driving Nauru’s energy transformation.

“This handover underscores the SMARTEN project’s critical role in advancing Nauru’s energy goals. It’s a crucial step toward low-carbon development, fostering confidence in renewable solutions and inspiring sustainable progress across communities.” Mr. Petrini said.
