Through a strategic partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Jordan Insurance Federation (JIF), the Central Bank of Jordan, and insurance companies, Jordan’s first Insurance Innovation Hackathon was launched to identify high-potential talent and drive customer-centric insurance solutions that respond to evolving social, economic, and climate risks.
More than a standalone competition, the Hackathon was designed as a strategic platform to strengthen Jordan’s inclusive insurance market through innovation, capacity development, and public-private collaboration.
As a direct outcome of the Hackathon, selected participants were nominated for international training opportunities, creating a clear pathway from national innovation platforms to global knowledge exchange. Among them was Mr. Muhannad Rajab, Business Development Manager at the Islamic Insurance Company, who participated in the Impact Insurance Academy 2026 in Turin, Italy, organized by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
During the programme, participants explored practical approaches to designing inclusive and climate-responsive insurance products, strengthening financial resilience, and developing innovative distribution models for underserved communities. The Academy also introduced participants to global best practices and successful public-private partnership models that can help inform future insurance solutions in Jordan.
“Winning the Insurance Innovation Hackathon was an important turning point for me. Beyond the competition itself, the advanced training at the Impact Insurance Academy exposed me to new approaches and global practices in inclusive insurance. Since I am working on a new insurance product idea, this experience helped me better understand how to refine the concept and make it more practical, technically sound, and market-ready,”Muhannad Rajab.
The knowledge gained through the Academy is expected to support the development of more inclusive insurance solutions in Jordan, particularly in areas such as climate risk, agriculture, and financial protection for vulnerable groups. One immediate application includes using internationally recognized frameworks such as PACE to help participants refine and validate customer-centric insurance products tailored to Jordan’s market needs.
“The Hackathon was never just an event; it was a strategic investment in Jordan’s human capital. By linking local insurance talent with world-class institutions like the ITC-ILO, we are helping build a bridge between local expertise and global market standards. This is essential for strengthening inclusive insurance and supporting the transition toward more innovative, technology-driven, and customer-centric solutions in Jordan.”Jordan Insurance Federation
Beyond individual participation, the initiative represents a broader strategy to transform innovation into long-term market impact. By creating a replicable pathway connecting local talent, global expertise, and practical market application, UNDP and its partners are helping lay the foundations for a more inclusive, innovative, and future-ready insurance sector in Jordan.
Inclusive Insurance and Risk Finance (IRFF)
The Inclusive Insurance and Risk Financing is a flagship initiative of the UNDP Center for Sustainable Financing and is part of UNDP's broader global policy network. It is the core of UNDP's insurance and risk financing support to its country offices, the countries in which it operates and its partners. The initiative offers policies, tools, methodologies, networks and partnerships. Moreover, it stimulates the development and provision of new insurance products, tools and services, while also investing in the long-term transformation of the insurance markets, with the aim of strengthening the resilience of the state and community to shocks and social, economic, health, climatic and other crises.
