Preventing Violent Extremism and Promoting Social Cohesion: A Practical Guide for Journalists

December 31, 2022

  • The relationship between the media and violent extremism remain complex given that in many instances, acts of violent extremism are often carried out with the aim of attracting media coverage in order to shock and instil fear in citizens across the globe. This remains a major challenge for media outlets who have to find a balance between competitive reporting, whilst maintaining accuracy and ethics. Additionally, the ever-evolving dynamics of the violent extremism landscape has undoubtedly presented the media with more challenges given the diverse range of issues that can be perceived as drivers of violent radicalisation of individuals and/or groups.
  • In this regard, in order to promote the different ways of how the media can support efforts to prevent and/or counter violent extremism, UNDP Malaysia and the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) collaborated to produce the ‘Preventing Violent Extremism and Promoting Social Cohesion: A Practical Guide for Journalists’. The aim of this Guide is to promote the idea that the media can play an integral role in setting the stage for peace, through the promotion of ethical reporting, fostering of social cohesion as well as peace journalism.
