Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) in Malaysia: Handbook for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)

December 31, 2022

  • Globally, the role of civil society organisations (CSOs) in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) is becoming increasingly important given their access to and knowledge of grassroot communities. This ultimately allows them to have first-hand knowledge and experiences of the dynamics behind possible drivers of violent extremism that exist within the communities in which they operate in. Rather than viewing CSOs as mere beneficiaries, the United Nations recognises the importance of partnering with civil society whom it believes can play an instrumental role in supporting the work of the organisation in the prevention of violent extremism through the promotion of rights-based approaches as well as engagements with communities, including women and youth.
  • In line with this approach, UNDP Malaysia collaborated with the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) to develop the ‘Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in Malaysia: Handbook for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)’, in the hopes that the publication would act as a  guide for existing and/or new CSOs to conduct impact-focused, targeted interventions. Understanding that there is spectrum of expertise and skills among CSOs, the Handbook also provides a range of recommended interventions that focus on a variety of PCVE-related issues that can be conducted by CSOs who either directly work on PCVE or those who work on areas that border this field or have a target audience that is vulnerable and susceptible to violent extremism
