Public disclosure of Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF)

April 5, 2023

The Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) have been prepared by UNDP for the UNDP-supported, GEF-financed project: “National Child Project under the GEF Africa Minigrids Program – Malawi”.

The UNDP-supported, GEF-financed Africa Mini Grids Program (AMP) aims to support African countries to increase energy access by reducing the cost and increasing commercial viability of renewable energy mini grids. It is a regional program with 21 participating countries, including Malawi.

The AMP project in Malawi is directly aligned with the National Energy Policy objective to increase access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, efficient and modern energy for every person in the country.

The objective of the ESMF is to ensure compliance of relevant policies, including UNDP’s Social and Environmental Standards (SES), and to direct the project personnel and stakeholders during the implementation of the project in tackling the social and environmental concerns identified. Among those, the ESMF aims to manage the Environmental & Social (E&S) impacts through appropriate mitigation measures that may arise with the implementation of the project providing specific guidance to be followed consistently with the existing policies at the local, national and international level and the UNDP.

The draft ESMF document are accessible below for public review and comments.

If you have any questions or comments, please email us at comms.support.mw@undp.org
