The National Statistics Office (NSO), in partnership with UNDP Malawi, is proud to announce that its groundbreaking Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Digital Observatory Hub has been selected as one of the top 360 digital development initiatives globally in the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025.

Out of 972 submissions from around the world, the SGBV Observatory Hub was recognised for its transformative role in digitising and harmonising gender-based violence data collection in Malawi. This recognition positions Malawi on the global stage as a leader in harnessing digital innovation to promote gender justice and social protection.

The Observatory Hub, accessible at https://www.nsogbv.mw, is a multisectoral data platform that captures data on SGBV, harmful practices, and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) from the community to national levels. It integrates data from Community Victim Support Units (CVSUs), police, and the judiciary, enabling evidence-based planning and policy formulation.

Since its launch, the hub has recorded over 15,800 cases and facilitated a fast-tracking prosecution rate. It has expanded from six pilot districts in 2021 to twelve districts by 2024, thanks to support from the UNDP, the Embassy of Iceland, the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the European Union (EU).

“This recognition is a testament to Malawi’s commitment to ending gender-based violence through data-driven solutions,” said Ms. Fenella Frost, UNDP Resident Representative in Malawi. “The Hub not only strengthens coordination among justice and social protection actors but also empowers communities to hold social and justice systems accountable.”

Commissioner Shelton Kanyanda of the National Statistics Office added, “We are honoured that our innovation has been recognised on the global stage. The Observatory Hub is a powerful tool for transparency, accountability, and action. It reflects our dedication to using data to protect the rights and dignity of every Malawian.”

Looking Ahead: Scaling the Hub for National Impact

Building on this global recognition, the NSO and UNDP Malawi are now focused on scaling the SGBV Observatory Hub to all 28 districts in Malawi. Plans include:

  • Integration with national case management systems to streamline referrals and follow-ups

  • Enhanced analytics and visualisation tools to support decision-making at all levels

  • Capacity building for frontline service providers and district data officers

  • Community engagement campaigns to raise awareness and encourage reporting

  • Exploration of mobile-based reporting tools to increase accessibility in remote areas

The expansion will be guided by the Malawi UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2024–2028 and the UNDP Country Programme Document (CPD), ensuring alignment with the Malawi 2063 Agenda, the Malawi Integrated Programme (MIP) 1, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
