On December 5, the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) convened its 2025 Annual Convention, drawing legal practitioners, policymakers, justice-sector partners, and international stakeholders from across the country.

Held under the theme “The Rule of Law: The Lawyer’s Role in Restoring Public Trust,” the gathering addressed one of Liberia’s most pressing challenges: rebuilding confidence in a justice system meant to serve its people.

The opening session set a tone of collaboration and accountability. Among the distinguished guests was UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Dia, who reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to strengthening justice and governance.

“The rule of law is not an isolated endeavor—it is a collective mission requiring partnership, institutional integrity, and the unwavering involvement of legal professionals,” Dia stated.

He highlighted UNDP’s ongoing support to the Ministry of Justice and key institutions, including the Law Reform Commission, Governance Commission, Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, and Liberia National Police, to promote integrity and people-centered justice.

Delivering the keynote address, Cllr. Mark M.M. Marvey challenged Liberia’s legal community to embrace its ethical responsibilities. “The rule of law is not just theory—it is the framework that safeguards liberties and ensures governance rooted in fairness,” he said.

He reminded lawyers that their character and competence are constantly under public scrutiny: “A lawyer who prosecutes or defends a cause in court must know that he or she is also on trial.”

Panel discussions explored judicial independence, anti-corruption measures, law enforcement challenges, and reforms to ensure timely and accessible justice.

A highlight of the convention was the LNBA’s recognition of high-performing judges for disposing of the highest number of cases in 2025—a symbolic gesture underscoring the Bar’s commitment to reducing case backlogs and promoting efficiency.

Honorees expressed gratitude and pledged continued dedication to a judiciary that delivers justice swiftly and fairly.

As the convention closed, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose: restoring public trust in the rule of law begins with integrity, diligence, and courage from those sworn to uphold it. The 2025 LNBA Annual Convention ended not just as a meeting, but as a reaffirmation of the legal profession’s role as guardians of justice in Liberia’s democratic journey.
