Imagining Possible Futures for Human Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean

March 17, 2026

The application of futures thinking on human mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) by UNDP highlights a growing need to explore methodologies that allow us to be anticipatory in our work.

This exercise does not present a universal experience nor offer an exhaustive outlook; instead, it explores specific areas where UNDP can enhance understanding of trajectories in human mobility through capturing signals of change. It raises essential questions such as: What are the current observations on human mobility within the region? What risks and opportunities do these present? And critically, why are these factors vital for sustainable development in LAC?

This approach recognizes human mobility as a complex and evolving phenomenon that not only involves the movement of people across borders but also encompasses the aspirations, challenges, and opportunities that influence the region’s development path. By examining migration through this lens, UNDP aims to foster a forward-looking perspective that transcends immediate challenges, focusing on long-term implications for the region’s growth and stability.
